This is a great variety of photos furnished by
Kenneth Van Kley who served in the ship's office
during his tour of duty in the late sixties. (67-69)
Surely those who served during this time frame or others can
relate to the photos and ongoing work of the ship and shipmates.
If you have more photos or can add some stories about these or other
incidents and experiences during your tour, please contact me.
I'd like to have them for the website. (

It looks like the cleaning lady didn't come by to clean up after the party, but really this is the effects of a bad storm at sea. If you've ever wondered why you should "Sweep down and Secure" your work and storage rooms, just look at this mess.
Unfortunately some things like office furnishings are not bolted down because they are moveable during work hours.
In the photo is the ship's vehicle (pickup) which was used to make various trips like mail and movie pick ups. The CO would use it to go to meetings or other "offical" businesses
The ship's pick up was handy for many things, but you couldn't use it to go downtown to get a hair cut.
This was accomplished onboard by "Masterful Barbers"
Here the Snoho's LCVP comes along side. Likely filled with mail and surely those "First ever Run New Movies"

USS New Jersey shelling North Vietnam troops
This is one of the dangers always lurking in the waters of DaNang and in the waterways, canals and deltas .... SAPPERS. They would swim out to the ship, place explosives and leave before it exploded. In this attack nearly 60 shipmates were killed or injured.
Pictured is the USS Westchester County LST 1167
Here an aircraft lands (1965) on a makeshift landing field built of metal locking plates. The Snohomish County delivered tons of these to and fron Okinawa and Vietnam.
Note the rubble from the prior bombings.
